To prepare a comprehensive index to the Southern Life Histories collected in the 1930s by the Federal Writers' Project, a New Deal Relief Project. These histories are one of the earliest attempts to obtain an oral history of ordinary Americans. PI will index these histories, annotate them, amass biographical information on the interviewers and write a general introduction to these materials.
