To support a series of interdisciplinary symposia on the topic "The National Purpose Reconsidered: 1776-1976", as part of the commemoration of the National Bicentennial. During 8 separate evening sessions a principal lecturer drawn from among the world's outstanding humanists and scholars, will address aspects of the American £ast, its values and distinctive contributions, examining the nature of continuity and change in the national purpose since independence.
