Louis P. Gerteis (Project Director: February 1978 to present)
To hold a three-day conference examining black and white responses to what has been called the first Reconstruction (1865-76) and how these may be related to black and white responses to the second Reconstruction (1955 to the present). In response to demand by secondary school teachers in the St. Louis region, workshops will be held after the conference to discuss local public policy issues in the context of policy problems brought up at the conference. Grant will help pay transportation and per diem expenses of young scholars, black and white, who would otherwise be unable to attend these events.
