Metadata Games: Improving Access to Humanities Artifacts

FAIN: HK-50021-12

Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH 03755-1808)
Mary D. Flanagan (Project Director: January 2012 to December 2016)

The implementation of a software system that would use game play to allow users to contribute high-quality descriptive information about digital collections of humanities materials held by cultural heritage institutions.

Our team received Level II Start Up funding to create a pilot of Metadata Games (MG), a software system that uses computer games to collect information about artifacts in libraries and archives as they strive to go digital. Games are useful in that they can entice those who might not visit archives to explore humanities content while contributing to vital records, and they create much more metadata than typical staff can do alone in the same timeframe. The system is open-source and is easily customized to meet each institution’s needs. The full project employs new techniques to make the system smarter and more trustworthy. We will also create new game components. MG can be used to enhance knowledge about artifacts in particular disciplines and fields, or with interdisciplinary collections. MG has the potential to unearth new knowledge that could radically enhance scholarship in the humanities, expanding what records we can encounter in our quest to understand the human experience.

Title: How games can help us access and understand cultural artifacts.
Author: Mary Flanagan
Author: Peter Carini
Abstract: A lack of quality metadata is a key problem encountered with mass-digitization projects as institutions strive to "go digital." This paper reports on a pilot study of Metadata Games, a software system that uses computer games to collect information about archival images in libraries and archives as these institutions digitize millions of items across national collections. Games offer a unique advantage for collecting metadata because they can entice users who might normally be inclined to visit archives to explore humanities content and, in the process, contribute to vital records, and they can work in a wide-scale, distributed fashion to collect much more metadata than a typical archives staff member could contribute alone in the same time frame. Metadata Games can be used to enhance knowledge about images associated with particular disciplines and fields, or in interdisciplinary collections. This open-source system is easily customized to meet each institution's needs. By inviting mass participation, Metadata Games opens the door for archivists, researchers, and the public to unearth new knowledge that could radically enhance scholarship across the disciplines. Metadata Games expands what researchers, students, and the public can encounter in their quest to understand the human experience. Games offer great promise for humanities scholarship by uniting the culture of the archives with a diverse user base, including researchers, hobbyists, and gamers.

Author: Claire Knowles
Author: Scott Renton

Abstract: Digitised archival, museum, gallery and library content often lack metadata on the subjects within the image as the only metadata is for the source object. For example, the name of the author of the digitised book is known, but not that the image shows a bird. Crowdsourcing games allow this missing data to be captured through mass-participation with users describing what they can see. The integration of user-generated tags aids discovery of cultural heritage collections through the enhanced search terms provided. Tiltfactor Laboratory at Dartmouth College has developed Metadata Games http://www.metadatagames.org as an online platform for gathering user-generated tags on photo, audio, and video collections. In tandem, the University of Edinburgh has developed its own crowdsourcing game to improve discoverability of its collections. This presentation will discuss our experiences with crowdsourcing games including challenges encountered and workflows for integrating user-generated/folksonomic tags with authoritative data to aid discovery. Preliminary data will be presented illustrating the extent that user-generated tags enhance search at one’s institution and increase traffic to online collections. Finally, there will be information on how you can use metadata games to enhance the discoverability of your institution's collections.

METADATA GAMES TAG EVENT: MAY DAY! MAY DAY! (Blog Post)
Title: METADATA GAMES TAG EVENT: MAY DAY! MAY DAY!
Author: Tiltfactor Staff
Abstract: “Tiltfactor is proud to announce a new collaboration with the British Library! To celebrate, Tiltfactor’s Metadata Games project will launch the new tagging game Ships Tag as part of a tag event called May Day! May Day! starting midnight on May 1st. The collaboration between the British Library and Tiltfactor presents an innovative way for public users to explore and tag the British Library’ collection of over a million public domain images which were posted onto Flickr Commons in December 2013. By playing Ships Tag, players produce in-game tags which directly contribute to the Library’s content knowledge. This not only helps the British Library augment its metadata, but it also greatly expands the collection’s accessibility for public research, reuse, and repurposing. The entire collection, whose subjects range from intricate maps, geological diagrams, charts, illustrations, landscapes and more, is an amazing opportunity for players to be a part of the process of organizing this vast online collection.”

Abstract: “The team is set to tackle a host of timely and provocative research questions. Here’s just a sample of them: Can a party game inspire greater interest in science and math? Do people act differently when they play a game on a board or on a digital device? How can we make sure people are thinking clearly and effectively, no matter what platform a game is in? How can we inspire the highest levels of participation and engagement and elicit high-quality contributions from players of a digital crowdsourcing game? Can a role-playing game build greater empathy, inspire new ways of thinking about social issues, and change the way players see themselves in the process? Which of the following would be the most distressing to players: disease-stricken dogs, cats, humans, or zombies? What could time-traveling scientists or ambitious princesses teach us about stereotypes and prejudice?”

Investigating the impact of ‘emphasis frames” and social loafing in a crowdsourcing game. (Article)
Title: Investigating the impact of ‘emphasis frames” and social loafing in a crowdsourcing game.
Author: Geoff Kaufman
Author: Mary Flanagan
Author: Sukdith Punjasthitkul
Abstract: With an increasing reliance on crowdsourcing games as data-gathering tools, it is imperative to understand how to motivate and sustain high levels of voluntary contribution. To this end, the present work directly compared the impact of various “emphasis frames,” highlighting distinct intrinsic motivational factors, used to describe an online game in which players provide descriptive metadata “tags” for digitized images. An initial study showed that, compared to frames emphasizing personal enjoyment or altruistic motivations, a frame emphasizing a “growing community of players” solicited significantly fewer contributions. A second study tested the hypothesis that this lower level of contribution resulted from social loafing (the tendency to exert less effort in collective tasks in which contributions are anonymous and pooled). Results revealed that, compared to a no-frame control condition, a frame emphasizing the preponderance of other players reduced contribution levels and game replay likelihood, whereas a frame emphasizing the scarcity of fellow players increased contribution and replay levels. Various strategies for counteracting social loafing in crowdsourcing contexts are discussed.

Metadata Games - Game Web Application (mg-game) (Computer Program)
Title: Metadata Games - Game Web Application (mg-game)
Author: Tiltfactor
Abstract: Metadata Games is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), crowdsourcing gaming platform that consists of two web applications, a "Content" (mg-content) and "Game" (mg-game) app. Both are written in php, javascript, and html5. Both web applications are designed to be installed on a LAMP (linux, apache, mysql, php) stack web server typically used at most web hosting services. The Metadata Games Game App includes a prototype NLP framework (a bootstrapped python server) for filtering tag submissions during gameplay and afterwards. The Metadata Games platform is designed such that multiple Content Apps connect to a central Game App. The Game App stores and manages the games, registered player profiles, and submitted tags. The Game App also includes a basic, publicly accessible Search page for finding and viewing media supplied by participating Institutions (via their Content App). On the Search page, one can do keyword search for media and filter by institution, collection, or media type. The code for the games reside on the Metadata Games Game App. For each game, the Game App handles what media to pull from the Content Apps for gameplay and game data, such as game states (e.g., information about whose turn it is, which round the game is currently in, etc.) and tags submitted by players.

This includes importing media (images, audio, and video), as well as defining and editing media collections, collection licensing terms, and institution descriptions. Thus, institutions, via their Content App, have full control over the media they choose to release for tagging by players of the Metadata Games suite.
