Abstract: Partnering with local Southeast Asian American communities, the Center for Asian American Studies and UMass Lowell Libraries will preserve cultural heritage materials documenting the experiences of Southeast Asians in the Lowell region since the late 1970s. The digital collection will be a resource for teachers, students, scholars and community members. "This collection will help preserve the history and stories of the Southeast Asian community, enabling future generations to understand the foundation on which our community thrives," said Linda Sopheap Sou, one of the community advisers for the Southeast Asian Digital Archive. University of Massachusetts Preserves Local Southeast Asian Immigrant Stories (Media Coverage)

Abstract: Lowell, MA, is home to the second-highest Cambodian population in the country, many of whom (or their families) settled there after fleeing genocide. Until recently, much of that history specific to the Lowell area from the 1970s on was not documented in a central location. The University of Massachusetts (Umass) Lowell is looking to change that, having recently launched its Southeast Asian Digital Archive (SEADA) to serve as a resource for the community, teachers, scholars, and more.
