Toward Cultural Diversity Within Cultural Institutions

Two annual paid internships for graduate students of color in UIC’s Museum and Exhibition Studies Program.

This proposal seeks funding to support paid internships, in the form of Graduate Assistantships that offer both stipends and tuition waivers, for graduate students of color enrolled in a two-year, interdisciplinary, majority of color Museum and Exhibition Studies (MUSE) program at a public university in Chicago, Illinois. Internships are important for entering the cultural fields, and required by MUSE. We partner with campus museums, galleries, and cultural centers that provide these opportunities to our students to the extent that funds allow. This year our students hold these positions at a campus historic house museum, contemporary art site, and Latino cultural center, where they have researched in archives and collections; written and published exhibition reviews; prepared and led tours addressing mural arts; and more. With this funding our program will be able to boost the number of Graduate Assistantships regularly available to MUSE graduate students of color.
