Endowment for seminar programs, graduate stipends, post-doctoral fellowships, and a partnership program with William and Mary Quarterly that joins the University of Southern California and the Huntington Library through two institutes: the Early Modern Studies Institute and the Institute on California and the West.

The USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute and the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West together request a $750,000 grant from the Challenge Grants program of the National Endowment for the Humanities to create an endowment to provide support for programs related to the interpretation of American history from the colonial period to the present. The $3.75 million endowment resulting from the NEH Challenge Grant will allow the Institutes to continue their efforts to fund fellowships for postdoctoral scholars and graduate students and to support innovative programming pertaining to scholarly, educational, and public programs focused on the American experience. The USC College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences has identified the two Institutes as focal points of its current $400 million capital campaign. The programs to be funded through this initiative will bring together the insights of scholars of the Atlantic world and of the Pacific basin.
