Endowment for the position of Education Coordinator.

Greenbelt, Maryland is a federally built planned community that was created as a model of town planning and social engineering as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The Greenbelt Museum serves as a visitor's center for this National Historic Landmark ton by offering tours of a historic house, and creating interpretive exhibits, walking tours, lectures, and other public programs. The Museum has experienced a growth in the number of school groups wishing to visit the Museum. With the endowment fund created through this challenge grant the Museum will hire a permanent Education Coordinator. The grant will allow the Museum to significantly expand its humanities capabilities through educational programs, recruitment and training of volunteers, and greater outreach programs. The Museum is at a critical transition point from an all-volunteer staff to a small paid staff who will ensure that the Museum will offer high-quality humanities programs into the foreseeable future. The Greenbelt Museum provides a vital humanities resource by providing programs for visitors to the historic site, and by engendering the community participation upon which Greenbelt was founded. The prestige of this national level grant will provide the crucial leverage the Museum needs to stimulate individual giving. The challenge grant will transform the Greenbelt Museum's ability to educate visitors, especially school age groups.
