A three-week institute for twenty-five college and university teachers on visual culture in Russia and the Soviet Union from 1860 to 1935, to be held in New York City.

The New York Public Library (NYPL) seeks a grant of $143,347 to host a three-week Summer Institute for 25 undergraduate teachers in the arts and humanities, research librarians, and museum educators. The topic of the seminar, "The Sources of Russian and Soviet Visual Cultures, 1860-1935: Study, Teaching, and Education" will explore how the period 1860 to 1935 was a time of tremendous change in Russia, and the Soviet Union, and a period in which Russian literature, political philosophy, and especially art--for the first time--exerted an enormous influence on European culture. Sessions will be divided into three broad categories: setting the historical context, examining genres of visual materials, and strategies for the practical integration of visual materials in the classroom, in publications, and in other educational tools and programs. Distinguished educators and other professionals will lead these sessions, under the general direction of the Co-Directors.
