During the summer of 2007, we propose to bring 25 high school teachers to Monterey, California, “Steinbeck Country,” to be immersed in a summer institute focusing on Steinbeck’s life, work, and region. The primary goal of the program is to ground participants’ understanding of John Steinbeck’s work in a social, geographical, historical, and literary context, to increase readers’ cultural awareness of the impact of his work. We will arrive at a broad appreciation of a writer who himself embraced a “holistic” sense of man’s place in the world. |
