A two-week institute for thirty school teachers on the history, literature, music, and art of the Great Migration.

The The African American Studies Program at University of South Carolina proposes to offer a two-week summer institute for 30 school teachers from July 16th to 27th, 2012 on the historical dimensions and significance of the African American Great Migration. The institute will delve deeper into the themes set forth in the 2010 Picturing America teacher conference entitled Out of the South: the African American Migration. Theme will be explored in depth through literature, painting, music, and oral history. In addition, teachers will also learn how to use literature, painting, music, and oral history in their own teaching. The institute thereby encourages innovative teaching strategies and, as relevant, the use of new technologies to develop effective teaching and learning practices. A learning environment will be created that encourages a free flow of information – both giving and receiving – among teachers and university instructors.
