The project for which I am asking support is a book comprising historical and linguistic commentary on five speeches by the Roman orator Cicero (106 - 43 B.C.E.), Philippics 10-14, which were delivered to the Senate in the spring of 43. This new study is the logical next project after my edition of the Latin text and commentary on Philippics 1-2 (Cambridge University Press 2003). Philipppics 10-14 document Cicero's success in beating the drums of war against his political enemy Mark Antony, whom he viewed as the chief obstacle to the restoration of the Roman Republic after the assassination of the Dictator Caesar by Brutus and Cassius on the Ides of March 44.
