1. A theoretical, historical, and methodological introduction. 2. A systematic examination of fictional forms available in Spain c. 1500, including hagiographical romances, chivalric novels, sentimental novels, ballads, allegories, and the ancient novel in translation. Specific texts are representative of their type, but this panorama is a continuum, and I conclude with the urnovel of the Spanish tradition, La Celestina. 3. A historiographic section examines three chronicles of the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabel, by Valera, Pulgar, and Bernáldez, and of the diary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage, all in relation to contemporary narrative culture. |
