The project analyzes the participation of indigenous peoples in the south-central Andes and its frontiers in the nation-making process during the nineteenth century by showing how indigenous economic activities affected their social networks and political interests. The proposed book manuscript will show the central role of indigenous people in economic and political development through the alliances formed with Creoles in domestic markets and the import-export complex. The Creole elites marginalized and suppressed the Indians by the late 19th century to become more “modern.” The book manuscript will offer a new view of 19th-century political and economic development in Latin America.
