This project focuses upon the narrated dilemmas of white Kenyans, who maintain a controversial and partial stewardship over some of Kenya's wildlife, land, and people, at the same time that they are haunted by pervasive reminders of the legacies of colonialism and the discomforts of their post-colonial position. Such dilemmas are indicative of a broader crisis of legitimacy concerning what it means to be a white citizen of Kenya, a crisis that speaks to global matters of autochthony and belonging in post-colonial nations. I am seeking support for four months of fieldwork and eight months of writing. I expect to produce a unique interdisciplinary volume by wedding political and social concerns about post-coloniality to intimate readings of narrative that expose the subtleties and ambiguities of white consciousness. |
