Ella Fitzgerald is one of the most famous and celebrated American popular singers of the twentieth century, yet her fame is not matched by any comprehensive understanding of her life, work, or legacy. There is no scholarly contextual biography. The existing biographies routinely lament their access to Fitzgerald's private life and simultaneously pay little attention to the cultural contexts of her achievement and provide little historically informed interpretation. With the advent of archival material available since her death in 1996, her influential career stands ready to be re-evaluated through scholarly research and critical re-evaluation. |
