Thomas Reid (1710-1796) builds a philosophy of mind in explicit opposition to his predecessors. In this book I interpret, explain and often defend Reid's theories of cognition, touch, vision and perceptual knowledge. I also analyze Reid's discussion of perceptual learning, the primary/secondary quality distinction and the nature and role of sensations. I intend to conclude the book with chapters examining Reid's philosophical methodology, his use of 'common sense' and his substance dualism. |
