This project seeks to reclaim the notion of honor as a key element in understanding human life and character. At the root of honor is the idea of living true to standards of excellence for beings like us. The standards by which we measure ourselves always have important social dimensions; the eye by which we assess our own excellence invariably invokes the eyes of a community. Ultimately, the human gaze looks both inward and outward: Integrity focuses on the inward and honor speaks to the outward elements of the self.
