Translation and Transformation: Esoteric Buddhism in Continental East Asia, 755-1276 will be the first comprehensive treatment in English of Esoteric Buddhism in the middle period of East Asian history. Employing a framework derived from post-colonial, translation, and conceptual metaphor theories, I demonstrate the pervasive influence of Esoteric texts, rituals, and art emanating from South Asia on religious and political life across continental East Asia. In doing so I provide a new approach to understanding cultural encounter. |
