Memory is always culturally constructed, but in the divided island of Cyprus it has been constructed around conflict. This book project examines the intertwined lives of several Greek and Turkish families from the village of Lapithos, and how their lives were linked through conflict. I focus on the village itself as site of memory, in the process examining the effects of state, local, and civil society institutions on the ways in which varying segments of one village society remember the intercommunal past. I am particularly concerned to understand the ways in which communal and autobiographical narratives are mutually constituted, and how the memorialization of loss may affect the experience of memory.
