I am proposing an annotated translation of the correspondence of Caroline Schlegel-Schelling (1763-1809) based on: CAROLINE. BRIEFE AUS DER FRÜHROMANTIK, ed. E. Schmidt, Leipzig 1913 (2 vols; 1510 pages). My scholarly apparatus will include exhaustive annotations for those not familiar with German literary and cultural history at large or with early German Romanticism specifically, as well as resolutions and clarifications of Schmidt’s original annotations. Schlegel-Schelling is best known for having been at the center of the early German Romantic circle in Jena. The correspondence copiously documents intellectual and cultural life, daily life, and contemporary German and European history during the late 18th/early 19th century.
