The project is a book on the exhibitions of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural work held during his lifetime. It will be organized into five chapters, each devoted to a major traveling retrospective or a series of exhibitions related to a sponsoring institution. The book will combine architectural history, biography, and cultural history to argue that while Wright sought to use his architectural exhibitions to mold public perceptions of his career, at the same time, critics and commentators, armed with cultural and political biases, not only misjudged his intentions, they clearly misunderstood the work itself. I plan to catalogue the models made for these exhibitions as an appendix.
