The project is a large monograph already in progress on the life and work of AntonĂn Dvorak (1841-1904), the most internationally significant of Czech composers. No book of a scope adequate to his import has appeared in a major language, and the large Czech monograph has proved unreliable. The new study, already accepted for publication as a book of 500 pp. with music examples and illustrations plus a CD-ROM with additional commentary, references, and original languages of quotations, will provide a more complete and truthful picture of the man, the musician, and his relations to the diverse cultures with which he came into contact. After work through 2006 with support from grants already secured, the NEH fellowship should allow completion.
