Angelo Poliziano (1454-94, Florentine) was one of the greatest humanists of the Italian Renaissance, who fundamentally advanced the modern development of classical studies. His revolutionary scholarship proved a crucial force in revitalizing study of the classical age on its own terms by pioneering historical and textual criticism and joining Greek scholarship to Latin. His supreme work of philological scholarship was the Miscellanea, which provides the clearest evidence of his methodology. My work will be a technical piece of scholarship in producing a Latin edition of the Miscellanies with a parallel English translation for (already commissioned) publication in Harvard University Press's I Tatti Renaissance Library, a series that provides dual-language texts of the most significant Latin works of the Renaissance for a broad readership. Project start is Jan. 1. The completed draft will be to the series editor by early fall, with revisions continuing through Dec. 31. |
