I seek NEH fellowship funding in order to complete work on a new book project, tentatively entitled "Free State Slavery: Indian Servitude in California, 1850-1867." By carefully examining the exploitation of Native American workers under the state's Indian Act of 1850, my book will provide the first comprehensive account of the little known system of Indian slavery that flourished in the "free state" of California during the Gold Rush and Civil War eras. During the course of my NEH fellowship, I intend to produce a completed manuscript for submission to the University of Nebraska Press, which has awarded me an advance book contract.
