My book project, The Soul of Spain: Flamenco and the Construction of National Identity, 1800-1975, will analyze how flamenco shaped Andalusians', Spaniards', and foreigners' sense of Spanish national identity from the early nineteenth century to the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. Flamenco is a complex art form, which incorporates poetry, singing, guitar, and dance, all humanistic enterprises. Therefore, I am exploring flamenco and national identity in an interdisciplinary way, borrowing approaches from history, literature, folklore, dance, and musicology. I will capture the complexity of flamenco's history by relying on methods and theory derived from cultural and intellectual history and the history of tourism. |
