FB-56778-13Research Programs: Fellowships for College Teachers and Independent ScholarsGregory Peter BarnhiselModernism, U.S. Cultural Diplomacy, and European Leftist Intellectuals during the Cold War1/1/2013 - 12/31/2013$50,400.00GregoryPeterBarnhisel   Duquesne UniversityPittsburghPA15282-0001USA2012American StudiesFellowships for College Teachers and Independent ScholarsResearch Programs504000504000

I am applying for an NEH fellowship to complete Cold War Modernists, my book-in-progress that documents how U.S. cultural diplomacy employed literary and artistic modernism to appeal to European leftist intellectuals in the early Cold War. This endeavor, I argue, transformed public understanding of modernism, making what had been seen as a radical anti-bourgeois artistic movement into the house style of the Western highbrow establishment. The book is under contract with Columbia University Press, and I would use the twelve months of the fellowship period to finish the research for this book (which will necessitate time in archives primarily in Washington, DC), write the two remaining chapters of the book, and revise the three chapters I have already written and that have been published in journals.
