In recent decades, genetic tests for rare disorders have been introduced into medical practice. These tests have raised a number of humanistic concerns. Genetic tests are now being developed that can determine susceptibility to common disorders such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. It is likely that this form of testing -- and its potential for widespread use -- will raise new types of concerns. Summer-stipend support is sought to permit a comparative study of the ethical, social, and policy issues that arise with genetic tests for common disorders. The study will involve a combination of ethnographic, oral-history, and archival approaches. The material collected will be incorporated into a book aimed at general and academic audiences.
