I am writing the first major study of the Broadway composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb. My book contains eight chapters, including an examination of Kander and Ebb’s collaborative process, analyses of their major successes--including Cabaret and Chicago, and discussions of their film music. Because my book is the first scholarly study of Kander and Ebb, I rely heavily on primary sources in New York, including Kander’s privately held musical manuscripts. My research in New York must be completed during an extended stay this summer. An NEH Summer Stipend will underwrite this trip and thus make it possible for me to write the book during the 2004-05 academic year. The publisher’s deadline for my manuscript is August 2005.
