I investigate the logic and semantics of attributions of mental states towards objects. Examples include wanting a specific bicycle for your birthday, looking for a specific person, fearing a specific enemy, and imagining a specific landmark (e.g. the Eiffel Tower). The main probems arise in accounting for cases where the same verbs are used but there is no specific object towards which the attitude is directed: wanting a bicycle for your birthday, looking for a policeman, imagining a tower, but in each case, no specific one.
