This project investigates verbs of physical perception (as in "hear" or "listen") and how their meanings and structure have developed over the history of English. It first looks into how different systems of perception verbs may affect the way we see the world. It then considers how these systems in earlier stages of English may reflect changing models of perception and cognition. In its approach, the study attempts to bridge the divergent perspectives of traditional philology and cognitive linguistics. This stage of the research involves completing a survey of the previous research on perception verbs in Latin and Old and Middle English, which will be background to three chapters of a book-length monograph, of interest to philologists and historical linguists.
