"Cézanne's Shadows," which will be my second book, explores the importance of Cézanne's ongoing involvement with the art of the past. In essays devoted to artists such as Poussin, Rubens, Watteau, Chardin, and Delacroix, I argue that Cézanne's art cannot be understood without an investigation into what Cézanne made of these earlier models, and how they continued to haunt even his mature work. The book will become a study of artistic ambitions as well as an analysis of the nineteenth-century art writing that Cézanne encountered. Its main evidence will be close formal readings of Cézanne paintings.
