I plan to conduct supplemental research and write a scholarly article focusing on the relationship between provincial politicians and Argentina’s national congress in the 1820s. I contend that the opposition between provincial and national authorities has been overstated during these years. Moreover, I argue that provincial politicians played a crucial role in the survival of traditional forms of authority, sharply limiting political participation after independence. I will carry out my research in the Argentine national archives, located in Buenos Aires, in June 2007. I will then return to my home institution to write the article in July 2007. The completed article will also serve as the draft for a chapter in my ongoing book project. |
