A four-week seminar for sixteen school teachers on Islamic culture in Iberia between 711 CE and 1614 CE.

This four-week Seminar for School Teachers covers the cultural history of Islamic Iberia. It seeks to provide a series of unique cultural perspectives on both the role of Islam and Islamic culture in European history, as well as upon the complex multicultural civilization that flourished for nearly a millennium in what is present-day Spain and Portugal. The seminar will be conducted in Spanish and will integrate the study of Islam in its western Iberian context in order to deepen the understanding of a crucial but little-known period for Americans in European, but especially Spanish, history that continues to inform the historical present. To be held in Spain, this international seminar will contribute to NEH's new Bridging Cultures initiative.
