Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a website, and educational and public programs comparing and contrasting Civil War Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant.

The Virginia Historical Society (VHS) requests a grant of $350,000 for implementation of "Lee and Grant," a nationally traveling exhibition that addresses a mainstream subject in American history. With this project, the VHS is engaging in a first-ever collaboration with the New-York Historical Society (NYHS) to present a major exhibition. The project also represents the first-ever head-to-head comparison of the epic biographies of the two premier Civil War generals. "Lee and Grant" presents 200 images, objects, and manuscripts that fill 4,000 square-feet of gallery space. The exhibition opens at the Virginia Historical Society (Richmond) in October 2007, and then travels to the Missouri Historical Society (St. Louis), the New-York Historical Society (New York City). the Museum of Southern History (Houston), and the Atlanta History Center.
