Development of new interpretive materials for tours, exhibits, and programs examining the religious, architectural, and cultural history of a major Lower East Side synagogue and its surrounding community.

In advance of the reopening in 2007 of the restored Eldridge Street Synagogue, a National Historic Landmark on New York's Lower East Side, the Eldridge Street Project will enlist scholars and museum planners to help develop a curriculum and interpretive manual for training docents and teachers. During the NEH project, the manual and a new training course will be pilot tested. The work will parallel the development of other media interpreting the story of East European Jews adapting to American society, politics, architectural styles, and religious practices.
