An accelerated archaeological conservation training program conducted in the United States for four conservators from Afghanistan.

The Oriental Institute seeks support from the NEH to implement the second phase of an archaeological conservation training initiative to provide desperately needed trained personnel in war ravaged countries of the Middle East. This project is modeled upon the successful Iraqi conservation training initiative, previously funded by NEH. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the focus of the current proposal. The Oriental Institute seeks funding to support an accelerated conservation training program for four professionals from the cultural preservation organizations of Afghanistan. The project activities occur in two phases: Phase I encompasses a four-month period devoted to customized curriculum development focused on Afghanistan and administrative arrangements for the training program; Phase II consists of a six-month period of intensive archaeological objects conservation training. The proposed 10 month program is scheduled to take place March 2007 - December 2007.
