Consultation with a conservator and the purchase of equipment to monitor environmental conditions in the 1865 National Historic Landmark building that houses library and natural history collections. The institute preserves the historic interiors, furnishings, and exhibitions that were created between 1885 and 1890 and provides visitors and researchers a view of late-19th-century science, education, and museology.

The NEH Preservation Assistance Grant will support the preparation and implementation of an expanded environmental monitoring program for the Wagner Free Institute of Science, including the purchase of environmental monitoring equipment. The Institute will consult with conservator Catharine Hawks to develop a fully integrated monitoring program for the entire site, including all collection storage areas, problem spots in our National Historic Landmark building, and areas of upcoming renovations as recommended in Ms. Hawks ReCAP report for the Institute prepared in October 2007.
