A general preservation assessment of archival, manuscript, and artifact collections documenting the Japanese-American resettlement experience in Chicago, the primary post-internment destination for people of Japanese ancestry after World War II.

Funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities will support a one-time consulting fee for a preservation specialist to assess the Japanese American Service Committee's (JASC's) collections and storage conditions, with attention to preservation and organization, and make recommendations for future preservation actions. Recommendations will provide a blueprint for JASC's Legacy Center future, Chicago's largest publicly accessible library, archive and repository containing a very unique collection of Chicago Japanese American history, with particular emphasis on the resettlement period following World War II, when Japanese Americans were released from wartime internment camps.
