Con/Vida seeks a $40,000 NEH Planning Grant to organize a three-part traveling exhibition, “Bandits and Heroes, Poets and Saints,” to bring popular art from Brazil’s Northeast to libraries, community centers, schools, churches and small museums across the U.S. The constituent exhibitions – subtitled “The Land and Its People,” “Expressions of Faith in Popular Art,” and “Poetry, Improvisation, and Song” – each address a singular aspect of NE Brazil’s distinctive culture with its fusion of European, African and indigenous traditions. An interpretive brochure and public lecture will accompany each exhibition. The exhibitions will be prepared and publicized, support materials created, and one prototype exhibition inaugurated under the Grant. |
