This proposal seeks funding for the period of January 1, 2016 and ending June 30, 2019 for the ACLS International and Area Studies Fellowships. The program is integrated into the central ACLS Fellowship competition in acknowledgment that multi-disciplinary research characterizes not only area studies but much work in the humanities in general; area studies scholarship benefits from evaluation in this larger context. Integration of the programs maximizes the number of NEH Fellows as they are supported both by grant funds and by ACLS endowment funds. This proposal requests funding for postdoctoral scholars working on Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Eastern Europe, or the former Soviet Union in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences.
