The equivalent of three fellowships a year for two years.

This application seeks continued funding for the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) under the Endowment's initiative supporting Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions. Previous grants since 1975 have helped support a deep, rich, and growing body of scholarship in many fields, including the development of the field of book history. The funding requested is the same amount as was awarded in the previous grant, that is, sufficient funds to award three fellowships at the maximum stipend annually for three years. For more than three decades, the AAS fellowship program has made the Society's unparalleled resources for the study of American history and culture through 1876 more readily available to scholars from throughout the nation, has fostered a productive culture of collegiality among fellows and staff, and has enabled the Society to enhance its services to humanistic scholarship in and about the United States.
