Work on the second stage of the Dolley Madison digital edition project, including completion of transcriptions, annotation through 1846, and publication through 1844. (36 months)

The purpose of this project is to continue work on the Dolley Madison Digital Edition (DMDE). During this grant period we will complete the transcriptions, bring the annotations through 1846, and publish through 1844. Dolley Madison was the most important First Lady of the 19th Century, and she created a model for the position that remains relevant to this day. The DMDE is already an important resource for scholars of the Early Republic and of Women's history, and a model of born-digital documentary editing.
