A conference and resulting book of essays on the subject of nationalism in the Americas. (18 months)

We propose a conference and book of essays on "Nationalism in the New World: The Americas and the Atlantic World" to bring scholars from North America, Latin America, and elsewhere together, to enlarge and reinvigorate the current debate on the origin and meaning of nationalism. Few forces have shaped the modern world more than nationalism and few are more important to our world today. Scholarship on nationalism has flourished in recent years but with far too little attention paid to the new nations that emerged in the Americas, those "Creole pioneers" that first showed the world what modern nation states would look like. Our conference will bring scholars together across national and disciplinary boundaries to explore the exchange of ideas, models, and leaders in the age of nationalism and bring fresh thinking to our understanding of nationalism's origin and meaning. A book of essays in English and Spanish-Portuguese editions will broadcast the results of our conference to a large audience and help set the course for future discussion.
