Study of ancient Corinth's stone architecture in order to describe and assess its central role in architectural history. (30 months)

The ultimate goal of this project is the publication of a comprehensive history of the Greek stone architecture at Corinth. Though on balance Corinth played at least as important a role as Athens in the evolution of monumental architecture in Greece, an analytical history of the distinctive character and contributions of Corinthian architecture has never been compiled. There is no greater gap in the study of classical Greek material culture than that represented by the architecture of this great architectural and cultural center. The publication of a detailed analytical history of Corinthian architecture will immediately affect the outlook and approach of all specialists in classical Greek architecture and Corinthian studies, and will ultimately have a profound effect on the synthetic views of Greece constructed by cultural historians and passed on to general audiences in the humanities.
