Endowment for publication subventions and an award program in musicology as well as fund-raising costs.

The American Musicological Society seeks an NEH challenge grant of $240,000, which with a 4:1 match will yield $1,200,000. These funds will endow four publication-related initiatives of the Society. The bulk of the funds ($900,000) will create a new subvention supporting the publication of first books by young scholars, whose work often represents the cutting edge of scholarly research, but whose careers are often at their most fragile or challenging point. The remainder will go primarily to existing publication subvention programs, supporting musicological books more generally ($125,000) as well as a monograph series sponsored by the Society ($100,000). These subventions aim to optimize the quality of the best scholarly books on music while keeping their prices affordable. Finally, we propose a new award for books on music in American culture ($50,000), a vital area of musical research that appeals to the broadest literary and musical public.

A four-week summer institute for twenty-five college and university faculty on teaching the history of modern design.

The Canon and Beyond: Teaching the History of Modern Design is a four week summer teaching institute designed to prepare a diverse group of college faculty to meet an increasing demand to teach courses on the topic. The Institute is organized into three thematic units whose subjects address significant components of introductory courses in modern design history, from the early 19th century through the 1970s. The Institute Director will first present material to ground participants in foundational material that is typically covered in a survey course in design history. Then, a select group of visiting scholars will each lead in-depth seminars on a specific topic related to the thematic units, coinciding with their field of research and expertise. These complementary approaches will build and reinforce familiarity with standard material and major themes in the field, on the one hand, and introduce new material and critical perspectives.

This project will entail writing a book (during a two-semester sabbatical with half salary in 2005/06) about the role of music in the formation of national identity at the National Folklore Festival held in Cosquín, Argentina; the history and function of the event will also be addressed. Book data will be gathered by doing fieldwork and archival research with a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship during 2004/05, and findings will be related to theory regarding the relationship of festivals, music, and identity. It will be shown in the book how at the Cosquín festival identity is negotiated through music, how and why music is mediated, and how political, economic, and historical forces collide with local, national, and global musical interests.

Research and writing of a monograph examining how early twentieth century American authors expand representations of trauma.

Almost one-hundred years ago, modernists writing from the margins of a literary movement—or those who wrote about race, gender, sexuality, class, and ability—provided a counternarrative to the dominant psychoanalytic theory of trauma. “Aesthetics of Survival: Counternarratives of Trauma in American Modernist Literature” traces this alternative history to argue that American authors of the 1920s to 1940s—including Richard Bruce Nugent, Langston Hughes, H.D, Lola Ridge, Djuna Barnes, and Zora Neale Hurston—wrote out of the experience of social injustice to expand representations of trauma. Rather than locate trauma in major catastrophe, sudden accidents, and the imminent threat of physical death, as Sigmund Freud did in his work, these writers depict the impact of durational, intersectional, and collective violences to ultimately emphasize resiliency in the face of oppression.

Implementation of a traveling exhibition on Brazilian artist and landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx (1909–94).

NYBG seeks an Implementation Grant for the exhibition, Roberto Burle Marx: Modern Nature of Brazil (June 8-September 29, 2019), the exhibition’s travel to two additional venues, and a two-year public humanities position. Burle Marx is one of the most significant Brazilian artists of the 20th century and his work has had a lasting impact on landscape design around the world. This project will explore the deep connections between Burle Marx’s fine art and landscape architecture practice and his commitment to the celebration and preservation of native Brazilian plants. It will be the first show to combine a large-scale horticultural tribute to Burle Marx’s Brazilian modernist landscape design work with a curated exhibition showcasing his significant fine art works. The exhibition will also include smaller exhibitions on Brazilian plants and the Sitio Burle Marx. It will be complemented by self-guided tours, a mobile guide, and public and children’s education programs.

Implementation of a traveling exhibition and a catalog on African American painter Archibald Motley in the context of early-twentieth-century modernism.

The exhibition "Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist" will be the first time Archibald Motley's work is viewed within an early 20th century international modernist context. As a master colorist and radical interpreter of urban culture, Motley is one of the most important, yet least fully known, 20th century American artists. Despite the broad and enormous appeal of his images, the broader public remains unaware of Motley, largely because many of his important paintings remain in private collections, and major museums have not yet had the opportunity to acquire his work. The primary goal of "Archibald Motley" is to make the work of this important African American modernist better known to the wider public and to generate new scholarship on Motley, by placing his art within a larger historical and art historical context.

A Lyric Revival: the Avant-Garde, Popular, and Traditional in Spanish Poetry (1925-1936) analyzes the entwining of the popular with the vanguard in the so-named Generations of 1925 and 1927, as a response to Spain's felt need to readdress cultural memory, and to modernize conceptions of national and regional identity in relation to this cultural memory. This book challenges the idea that the avant-garde must oppose the recuperation of the collective past: in contrast with the first avant-garde's "forgetting" in the form of cosmopolitanism, the synthesis between the popular and the vanguard achieved by the Generations of 1925 and 1927 had a positive effect on the reassessment of cultural memory and identity. Three poets of these generations, G. Diego, R. Alberti, and F. Lorca, led the way to the rediscovery of the common past by accessing Spain's rich popular forms of poetic expression, melding them with the technical and aesthetic advances made by the previous avant-garde wave.

30 months of stipend support (3-5 fellowships) per year for three years and a contribution to defray costs associated with the selection of fellows.

The National Humanities Center, an independent center exclusively devoted to advanced humanities research, seeks five nine-month fellowships for the next three-year cycle (grant period Jan. 1, 2019-June 30, 2022). Since 1978, NEH has generously supported five NHC fellowships during each granting cycle, excepting the last cycle when it supported three. Designated “NEH Fellows,” recipients of these awards are chosen through a rigorous vetting process and join a vibrant intellectual community of 35-40 total Fellows. Each works on a major research project throughout the academic year with significant support from our library staff and fellowship office. End-of-year evaluations from the roughly 1,400 Fellows who have been in residence generally describe their year at the NHC as the most inspiring and productive of their careers. The NHC focuses attention to diversity in all of its dimensions so that Fellows represent a broad range of disciplines, institutions, backgrounds and perspectives.

Preparation of a critical edition and performance scores of works by George and Ira Gershwin, including music for string quartet, symphony orchestra, Broadway musicals, and film scores. (36 months).

The names of George and Ira Gershwin are synonymous throughout the world with American musical creativity. While readily accessible, their work too often circulates in substandard scores that contain surprising errors. In response, the Gershwin family estates, their publisher (Schott Music Group), and the University of Michigan have joined forces to produce The George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition, the first scholarly edition of the Gershwins’ oeuvre. This complete-works critical edition facilitates both study and performance, giving a wide audience—musicians, scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike—greater insight into the Gershwins’ creative output. By September 2019, the edition will have used its initial, three-year NEH grant to provide three volumes to Schott for publication and sale, and five volumes for rental to ensembles. An additional round of funding is sought to continue the employment of key staff and to continue this work.
