ABSTRACT: Bicentennial project to prepare the first comprehensive scholarly edition of the writings of George Washington (1732-1799), including letters written by and to him, heretofore existing in fragments and available only in major scholarly libraries or widely dispersed in private collections. Definitive edition will not exceed 75 volumes, the final volume to be published in 1988. To date, 75000 to 80000 document manuscripts have been collected, as well as 63 private letters. A cataloguing system, using date processing based on a plan developed at the Smithsonian Institution will be utilized. Funds for personnel and contractual services, supplies, documents.

The Papers of George Washington is a historical documentary editing project that is engaged in publishing a modern comprehensive edition of George Washington's public and private papers. The significance of The Papers of George Washington project rests initially on the profound importance of Washington's correspondence. This edition provides unique insight into Washington's activities as commander in chief of the Continental army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and first president of the republic.

Preparation for publication of volumes 30 through 38 of the Revolutionary War series of the papers of George Washington (1732-1799). (24 months)

The Papers of George Washington is a scholarly documentary editing project that edits, publishes, publicizes, and makes accessible a comprehensive edition of George Washington's public and private papers. This edition, available in both digital and print formats, has been divided into six series, five of which have been completed: the Diaries; the Colonial Series; the Confederation Series; the Presidential Series; and the Retirement Series. Project staff now focuses on completing by 2028 the Revolutionary War Series. The University of Virginia Press has published seventy-eight of a projected ninety-two print volumes. The Washington Papers also are accessible on the web. Since 2007, all of our volumes have appeared in UVA Press's Rotunda digital edition following publication of the print edition. Scholarly work on 12 volumes of the letterpress edition of the Papers of George Washington: volumes 15-20 of the Revolutionary War series, volumes 13-16 of the Presidential series, and volumes 1-2 of the Financial Papers series.

The project is engaged in producing a comprehensive annotated edition of the public and private papers of George Washington, including for the first time the letters and other documents that he received as well as those written by him. The work is being done in series corresponding to significant segments of Washington's life and papers. Having edited and published Washington's "Diaries" and the "Colonial", "Confederation", and "Retirement Series" of his correspondence, the editors are now focusing on completing the larger "Revolutionary War" and "Presidential Series", and they have begun work on Washington's "Financial Papers". By the end of the current grant period in April 2004, fifty-four of an estimated total of ninety-one volumes will have been completed. The edition is fundamentally important because of the central, indispensable role that Washington played in the creation of the American republic and its system of government as commander in chief of the Continental army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and first president of the United States. Washington's voluminous papers also provide an invaluable window into American society at all levels during the latter half of the eighteenth century, including domestic, business, and agricultural affairs as well as western development and social life.

The project's scholarly value and sustained productivity won it the National Humanities Medal in 2005. This request is for two years funding to further the work of this project.

Preparation for publication of volumes 17 and 18 of the Presidential series and volumes 19-21 and 23-30 of the Revolutionary War series of the papers of George Washington (1732-1799), Revolutionary War general and first president of the United States, and continued work on a digital edition of Washington's financial papers. The Papers of George Washington is a historical documentary editing project that is engaged in publishing a modern comprehensive edition of George Washington's public and private papers. The project has, to date, published sixty-five of a projected eighty-seven volumes and issues two new volumes, on average, each year. The project also has a Digital Edition, and has begun work on a digital-only Financial Papers project. The project's scholarly value and sustained productivity won it the National Humanities Medal in 2005. This request is for a three-year grant, covering our production of five new letterpress volumes and continued development of the Financial Papers project to the point of completion of a web interface providing access to a database containing Washington's three main ledger books.
