Endowment for publication subventions and an award program in musicology as well as fund-raising costs.

The American Musicological Society seeks an NEH challenge grant of $240,000, which with a 4:1 match will yield $1,200,000. These funds will endow four publication-related initiatives of the Society. The bulk of the funds ($900,000) will create a new subvention supporting the publication of first books by young scholars, whose work often represents the cutting edge of scholarly research, but whose careers are often at their most fragile or challenging point. The remainder will go primarily to existing publication subvention programs, supporting musicological books more generally ($125,000) as well as a monograph series sponsored by the Society ($100,000). These subventions aim to optimize the quality of the best scholarly books on music while keeping their prices affordable. Finally, we propose a new award for books on music in American culture ($50,000), a vital area of musical research that appeals to the broadest literary and musical public.

The MLA has conducted twenty-two surverys of undergraduate and graduate fall semester course enrollments in all languages other than English at US Colleges and Universities. During a sixteen month period two full-time research assistants conduct research with a remarkably high response rate of over 95%. The MLA surverys are widley acknowledged by the field of lanuage teaching, government, and industry as the single, all-inclusive metric of United States post-secondary interest in the study of languages. This Chairman's grant will support the salary of one of the two research assistants who we hire to conduct data collection. Cost sharing, calculated at $150,000 will cover addtional funding for a second research assistant, IT development and for an verage 25% of the annual salaries of the three regular MLA staffers.

Research for a history of pre-colonial India (1550-1750), focused on the role of merchant families in shaping religious and literary traditions.

This project uncovers and explains the relationship between mercantile sensibilities, new modes of religious thought and practice, and the rise of vernacular literature in north India during the early modern period, ca. 1550-1750. By tracing the involvement of merchant families and networks in the origin and development of sectarian religious communities and in the creation and dissemination of new literary genres, I provide new explanations for the emergence of distinctly modern forms of individual and social identity prior to the colonial period. I also demonstrate that merchants and their particular worldview played a central role in the construction of religious, literary, and intellectual networks that would later become the foundation for an Indian public sphere.

Plains Indian Sign Language is used within the Plains cultural and linguistic groups of the USA and in Canada. Sign language has been documented at every level of social interaction within most Native American groups and as a widespread medium of communication between members from distinct language groups. The focus of the proposal is documentation of sign language among Indians from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, carried out in large part by some of the first ethnologists and anthropologists connected with the Smithsonian Institution. The best known documentation is found at the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Archives. The goals are to develop an online digital language archive from the 1870s illustrations and 1930s films; create annotations, translations, and captions to accompany the materials; generate additional annotations for the Smithsonian's online catalog; and make it possible to add to the linguistic corpus as more documentation is digitized. The proposal is endorsed by the Smithsonian, which will provide work space for the applicant, and supported by the University of Tennessee, which will also host the digital archive. The Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL) Corpus Linguistic Project will demonstrate how indigenous sign language serves as an alternative to spoken language among deaf and hearing tribal members. Since PISL and other indigenous language varieties in the corpus are endangered, additional documentary linguistic work is critical to advance our knowledge of the cognitive, cultural, and linguistic underpinnings of indigenous signed language varieties and to the survival of these languages. The project objectives are to: 1) transform an extensive collection of PISL documentary linguistic materials into a digital corpus that is accessible to local Native American communities and scholars of linguistics and anthropology, and related disciplines; 2) identify and involve more American Indians who are learning and using indigenous sign language varieties in order to generate linguistic descriptions about sign language usage, lexicon, and grammar; 3) collaborate with expert signers from different American Indian nations; 4) collect additional documentary materials of indigenous signing from archival and contemporary fieldwork; 5) increase awareness about sign language in intertribal and international communities; and 6) disseminate project outcomes to Native American communities, broader audiences, and researchers of indigenous and endangered languages. The digital corpus will contribute to training students in field methods, linguistic analyses, emergent technologies, and engage members of Native communities in documenting and revitalizing their languages. Preparation of the last volume and the updated online edition of the "Dictionary of American Regional English" (DARE), which documents geographical differences in the vocabulary, pronunciation, and morphology of American English.

The Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE) is a reference work describing regional and folk varieties of American English. Based on a large body of oral data collected in all fifty states between 1965 and 1970, it also draws on thousands of written and electronic sources covering the colonial period to the present time. A unique feature of DARE is its use of computer-generated maps to show distributions of regional terms. Volumes I (A-C), II (D-H), III (I-O), and IV (P-Sk), published by Harvard University Press in 1985, 1991, 1996, and 2002, respectively, have been highly acclaimed by scholars and public alike. Volume V (Sl-Z) will appear in 2010, with supplementary materials and an electronic edition to follow. DARE's collected resources will remain available for use by researchers during the ongoing updating of the electronic edition.

Translation and creation of a critical edition of letters written by Dakota people living in Minnesota in the mid-nineteenth century. (24 months)

"This Is Who We Are: Letters from the Dakota, 1838-1878" will provide English translations of first-person narratives of Dakota people writing in their own language during the mid-19th century compiled as a critical edition. Translation from Dakota to English, with historical and biographical context, will provide access to a body of work previously unavailable to scholars of Dakota history and culture, of Minnesota history, and of American Indian policies during the Civil War. Beyond regional interest, these letters may also have significance for scholars in the fields of internment camp studies, truth commissions and reconciliation, as well as broader military history, United States history, and colonization history. Additional contributions may be made in fields where borderlands, resistance, subaltern states, and other theories of center and periphery come into play. This time period spans the years of most drastic change for Dakota people: land loss, war, exile, and recovery.

Preparation for print and digital publication of fifteen volumes of previously unpublished field notes about four native tribes of the American Great Plains, collected by anthropologists in the 19th and early 20th centuries. (36 months)

Focusing on a large body of unpublished works that document cultures of four American Indian tribes of the Great Plains--Pawnee, Arikara, Hidatsa, and Mandan--these unique documents provide detailed descriptions of those tribes’ cultures and languages recorded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the words of prominent members who lived those cultures or remembered the words of their elders. By publishing extant documentary records, today’s tribal members will gain sophisticated knowledge and appreciation of their heritage. Scholars will develop a better understanding of native cultures. Although Native Americans are integral to the historical and cultural development of the United States, primary sources describing traditional cultures in native voices are not available. The published record has been filtered through the lens of Western culture. Using these four tribes as representative cases, this project proposes the creation of a new library of Plains Indian cultures.
