Two one-week Landmarks workshops for eighty school teachers on Duke Ellington and his world. This workshop illuminates the life and music of Duke Ellington (1899-1974) in cultural and historical context, using eight compositions (including "Mood Indigo" and "Take the 'A' Train") as "anchor works" for the week's study. Under the direction of music professor Laura Nash, participants engage with Ellington's work and his world through lectures, discussions, hands-on musical participation, and two all-day visits to historic and cultural sites in New York City. Taking the A train to Harlem, participants visit the Sugar Hill Historic District, where Ellington lived, and are guided on a private tour of the National Jazz Museum by Executive Director Loren Schoenberg. The second day trip to New York features the resources of Jazz at Lincoln Center with curator Phil Schaap. Participants explore the role of Ellington's radio and television broadcasts at the Paley Media Center with Jim Shanahan (Boston University) and learn about Ellington's long form music at Carnegie Hall, where "Black, Brown, and Beige" premiered in 1943. A jazz show at Birdland Jazz Club and a performance of swing dance music conclude the day visits to New York. In Fairfield, historian and director of Black Studies Yohuru Williams provides relevant grounding in twentieth-century African-American history and addresses intersections of race and popular culture. During the days on campus, music professor and bassist Brian Torff leads a specially assembled live big band in presentations and performances to give participants direct experience with the anchor works and with improvisation, as well as opportunities for discussion with band members. Workshop guest faculty include jazz critic and journalist Gary Giddins; educator and composer David Berger (Juilliard), who transcribed and edited the majority of Ellington's works; and Monsignor John Sanders, trombonist and librarian for the Ellington Orchestra, who shares his first-hand knowledge of playing, working, and traveling with Ellington, and of developing the Ellington archives. Prior to and during the workshop, participants read Ellington's Music is My Mistress; Harvey Cohen's Duke Ellington's America; John Edward Hasse's Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington; and Mark Tucker's The Duke Ellington Reader. They also have access to a password-protected website with Ellington recordings, sheet music, and video clips.

Endowment for publication subventions and an award program in musicology as well as fund-raising costs.

The American Musicological Society seeks an NEH challenge grant of $240,000, which with a 4:1 match will yield $1,200,000. These funds will endow four publication-related initiatives of the Society. The bulk of the funds ($900,000) will create a new subvention supporting the publication of first books by young scholars, whose work often represents the cutting edge of scholarly research, but whose careers are often at their most fragile or challenging point. The remainder will go primarily to existing publication subvention programs, supporting musicological books more generally ($125,000) as well as a monograph series sponsored by the Society ($100,000). These subventions aim to optimize the quality of the best scholarly books on music while keeping their prices affordable. Finally, we propose a new award for books on music in American culture ($50,000), a vital area of musical research that appeals to the broadest literary and musical public.

Augustana College, a Christian liberal arts institution affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America seeks a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to strengthen the Center for Western Studies' endowment. The Center is a department of the College with the mission of preserving and interpreting the history and cultures of the Northern Plains. As an archives, museum, academic publisher, and provider of educational programming and internships for the students and the campus, as well as the region, Augustana is seeking a $300,000 challenge grant matched by the College on a four-to-one basis for a total endowment campaign of $1,500,000. A successful campaign will increase the Center's endowment and provide dollars to support, enhance, and expand the Center's main program areas which include the Archives and Library Program, the Dakota Conference on Northern Plains, Educational Exhibits, the Publications Program, and the Building Fund.

Prototype development and adaptation of open-source software tools to facilitate large-scale search and analysis of podcasts.

Despite an explosion of interest in podcasts - claims of a “Golden Age” of podcasts abound - sound remains mystifyingly difficult to analyze and the history of this emerging media form is already at risk of being lost. PodcastRE Analytics: Investigating Podcasting through Metadata and Sound aims to put podcasting’s data traces to work, making digital audio more usable, visible and audible than current archives. PodcastRE Analytics leverages the 120,000+ podcasts of the PodcastRE database (, a preservation collaboration between UW-Madison’s Libraries and Dept. of Communication Arts, to pioneer new techniques for the analysis and visualization of audio and metadata. While tools for data mining text archives exist, PodcastRE Analytics will allow users to explore audio in ways that are as familiar as textual resources. Using digital humanities methods, we can better research contemporary culture and investigate a new media form that has captured significant attention.

A three-year Tier II project to develop best practices for creating audio descriptions of humanities collections for the blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind.

Audio Description is an emerging and novel form of the digital humanities. Media accessibility is its primary purpose, as a way to translate visual media into audible media. But for its primary audiences – people who are blind or visually impaired – it is not a feature, bonus, or an extra, it is the medium through which they understand the visual humanities, including photographs, illustrations, videos, collages, and maps. This Research and Development project, “Improving Audio Description, Improving Access to the Humanities,” strategically focuses on creating better empirical foundations based on field tests, better open-source support infrastructure, and better in-situ models of Audio Description as a way to systematically address major challenges in the field. Through this approach, the research team will simultaneously build, test, support, review, and study new models in authentic heritage contexts across the country.

The NEH Fellowship program at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) gives U.S. scholars the opportunity to conduct research in Greece and utilize the excellent resources available on its campus. As the ASCSA’s most prestigious fellowship, earmarked exclusively for post-doctoral scholars to carry out research in the humanities, the NEH awards are a critical component of the School’s overall fellowship program. Each fellow contributes to the diverse academic community at the ASCSA, with research being conducted on a broad range of topics in the humanities. The research of our NEH fellows results in publications, lectures, and conferences that reach a wide audience of scholars, students, and the public in the U.S. and abroad. This proposal requests funding for 20 fellowship months per year for three years. The length of the proposed fellowships will range from 5 to 10 months depending on the selected applicants.

Preparation for publication of an open-access print and digital edition and translation, from Nepali to English, of the six books of Subi Shah (1922-2008), a Nepali performer and educator who documented Nepali folk music, drama and dance. (36 months)

This project will translate six volumes of Nepali performer Subi Shah's work into English and publish them digitally and in print, with accompanying scores, and audio and video recordings. Shah (1922-2008) was a Nepali performer and educator who made it his life’s work to develop, sustain, and promote Nepali folk performance. His writings on the varied genres that make up the Pangdure tradition of the central Nepali hills are the only existing scholarship that analyzes and provides concrete examples of all aspects of performance (song, instrumental music, dance, drama) with detailed information about their interrelationships. They thus provide an essential resource for scholars and performers, including information published nowhere else. This project contributes to these traditions' cultural sustainability by involving local performers, and to decolonizing performance studies by challenging and posing concrete alternatives to Eurocentric structures of knowledge.

Dances with Words (DWW) is a youth development initiative that works with young people, adult mentors, schools and nonprofit partners on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation empowering participants to become engaged civic leaders through literary, spoken word poetry and other art forms. DWW is a project of First Peoples Fund, a national organization founded in 1995 that supports Native American artists, culture and traditional knowledge. As part of Youth Speaks’ Brave New Voices cohort, Dances With Words has grown from four youth from one high school to 19 youth from all four high schools on the reservation and aims to continue to grow on Pine Ridge and create an adaptable program for other tribal communities. The program networks Native young people to literary traditions and other art forms, mentors, and the broader spoken word community,helping them grow into their roles as culture bearers, artists and community leaders.

Performances and facilitated discussions that probe the history and culture of people with disabilities through the disciplinary lens of disability studies.

Black Hills Works (BHW) is establishing the national award-winning Flutter Productions as an ongoing program. Mission: Creating opportunities for all performers to soar, challenging the perception of people with disabilities; while creating a new creative community in which performers with and without disabilities come together to create works that celebrate the human spirit. We create an original narrative, for performers of all ages and abilities, based in theater and contemporary dance. Pyroductions are adjusted and tailored to highlight the talents of our performers. Following the performances, we plan to conduct facilitated conversations that are led by the Center for Disabilities, University of South Dakota, with members of the audience as well as participants with and without disabilities and volunteers. These conversations will explore the contributions, experiences, history, and culture of people with disabilities and will identify how disability is represented in society.
