Begun in 1970, the Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas [TC] and Jane Welsh [JWC] Carlyle is regarded by biographers, historians, critics, students, and general readers as one of the finest and most comprehensive literary archives of the nineteenth century. Forty-two volumes have been published to date in book form by Duke University Press, and the first thirty-eight volumes have been published in the Carlyle Letters Online (http://carlyleletters.org), with volumes 39-41 now in the process of being encoded, edited, and set for release in spring 2015. This culmination of a thirteen-year effort to bring the Carlyles to the digital world has greatly increased the global accessibility of the edition. Through November 2014 of the current grant period, which began in October 2012, the CLO has had more than one million of its full-text pages accessed in more than 180 countries and has established itself as a leader in the now essential field of digital humanities.

With its first volumes published in 1970, the Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas (TC) and Jane Welsh Carlyle (JWC) is regarded by biographers, historians, critics, students, and general readers as one of the finest and most comprehensive literary archives of the nineteenth century. Forty-five volumes have been published to date in book form by Duke University Press, and the first 43 volumes have been published in The Carlyle Letters Online (http://carlyleletters.dukeupress.edu/), with volume 44 having been encoded and now in the process of final editing, to be added to the site early in 2018. This ongoing digital project, of 16 years to date, brings access to the Carlyles and their times to an increasing global audience, with well over a million downloads of full-page text to users from more than 180 nations. The online edition of the Carlyles’ letters is regarded as a pioneering model in the growing field of digital humanities.

With its impending aggregation into the NINES consortium, the CLO has established itself as a leader in the now essential venture of digital humanities.

Through Oct. 2011 of the current grant period, which began in July 2009, the CLO has had more than 560,000 of its full-text html pages accessed in more than 100 countries and has established itself as a leader in the now essential field of digital humanities.
